Types of Sea Turtles on AMI
From May to October, sea turtles become both summer guests and island residents on Anna Maria Island, sharing the sun-soaked shores with us. They are more than just cute visitors too — they’re crucial players in our marine ecosystems. Each sea turtle species brings its unique charm to the table, affecting the diversity, habitat, and function of Anna Maria Island’s environment. Whether they’re munching on seagrass, regulating the sponge population, gobbling up jellyfish, or ferrying essential nutrients around, sea turtles are like the marine superheroes of the Gulf of Mexico and Anna Maria Island’s coastline.
Sea turtle eggs are tiny powerhouses of impact. They, directly and indirectly, influence everything from vegetation to species distribution and even the stability of Anna Maria Island’s sandy shores. Those unhatched eggs supply a burst of top-notch nutrients to the dune ecosystems which help plants thrive and stabilize beaches. It’s a win-win because plant growth not only keeps our shores secure but also feeds a bunch of plant-munching critters, changing the game for species distribution.
Now, let’s talk about the stars of the show: the sea turtle species you can spot around Anna Maria Island. The most frequent guest in the nesting season is the Loggerhead but there are four more fascinating species you might get a glimpse of. Florida’s sandy beaches provide a crucial nesting spot for these federally threatened and endangered sea turtles, including the loggerhead, leatherback, green sea turtle, and even the occasional nesting appearance of the federally endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle.
About Island Turtle Watch
Meet the champions of turtle conservation for over 30 years, Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch (AMITW)! They’re the guardians of the 12-mile stretch of Manatee County shoreline where sea turtles and their incredible journey steal the spotlight. In their impressive three-decade run, AMITW has been on the frontline, monitoring a whopping 7339 turtle activities, safeguarding 4454 nests, and keeping a watchful eye over a staggering 301,694 turtle eggs.
But the real magic happens when they witness 271,680 little hatchlings make their way to the sea, destined to become the future generation of loggerheads, set to return to these shores in around 30 years. The heart of this operation beats with dedicated staff and volunteers who’ve meticulously documented the shoreline’s status and the fascinating trends in sea turtle nesting. It’s all about understanding, and the good folks at AMITW, along with marine conservation biologists, are leading the way to ensure these ancient mariners continue to thrive.

Adopt a Nest
Join the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch by adopting a sea turtle nest that’s made its sandy home right here on the beautiful beaches of Anna Maria Island! For just a $125 tax-deductible donation, you not only show your love for these incredible sea creatures but also get a special token of appreciation. A plaque of your choice will be placed right next to the nest, proudly displaying your commitment to turtle conservation. When that nest finally hatches the dedicated Volunteer Staff at Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch collects all the egg-citing data and the adoption package will be on its way to you within 30 days.
Inside your package will be your nest plaque which is your badge of honor, marking the spot where you made a difference, valuable data collected by the vigilant volunteers when they excavated the nest, and a heartfelt letter of appreciation from the dedicated volunteers. You will also receive a personalized adoption certificate which is delivered via email, a keepsake to remind you of your fantastic contribution to sea turtle conservation!
How to Share the Beach
If you want to share the sandy shores with our fantastic sea turtle friends, here are some friendly tips to ensure the sea turtles have a fantastic nesting season! Every sea turtle and their nests are like VIPs — Very Important Protected Species, and they are protected by law. There should be no touching, harassing, or taking sea turtles, their eggs, or those adorable hatchlings.
First things first, keep your distance! The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) wants us to give these incredible creatures some space. That means no getting within 50 feet of nesting sea turtles as this can cause them to abandon their nests. If you spot someone messing with a sea turtle nest or see a turtle in trouble, be a hero and report it to the FWC’s Wildlife Alert hotline. They’ll come to the rescue! When you’re wrapping up your beach day, make sure to do a little cleanup. That means no leaving trash behind, be sure to fill in any holes you dug (for the sake of turtles and humans), and pack up your beach toys and furniture before sunset.
Beach bonfires are not allowed during nesting season because they’re a danger to nests and can cause stress for nesting adult turtles. When night falls, it’s lights out! Turn off beachside lights or draw the curtains to keep from confusing nesting turtles or disorienting hatchlings. If you must use a light, make sure it’s low, long, and shielded. No bright flashlights or cell phone lights, please!
Remember, knowledge is power! Share these tips with your beach-loving buddies so that, together, we can be sea turtle superheroes!
